The design task was to deliver a concept proposal for a luxury retreat in nature that can be off-grid and energy autarkic. Given the undisclosed location, one of the main requirements was modular construction so that the house can easily be shipped and assembled anywhere. The concept envisions a semi-closed pavilion structure to provide maximum contact and harmony with the surrounding nature, suitable for the desired character and open location of the building. The structure is created by a series of modular boxes (utility rooms) covered with a cantilevered roof that divides two main areas: the living and sleeping. These areas can, depending on weather conditions, remain open to the external environment or be closed with sliding glass panels to provide full weather protection and thermal comfort. The building’s materialization combines CLT (cross-laminated timber) and timber-framed components filled with insulation. Energy neutrality is achieved with substantial support from roof-integrated photovoltaic panels. The house is equipped with a battery for energy storage and a heat pump.
